To recap, I whined about videos and sideshows last week, and this week I'm getting on the case of pop-up ads, music, and newsletter subscription sites. I hope you agree, if only so we can band together and create a grassroots uprising against these Internet faut pas!

Pop-up ads

I don't know if you know anything about marketing, but from what I can tell interruptive marketing is quickly going out of style; consumers are getting too good at blocking these ads out of their attention span, nevermind the fact that these ads are just super annoying. The thing is, websites are catching on to the fact that we all have pop-up blockers and are now using a new generation of pop-up ads that aren't exactly pop-ups but that completely obstruct one's view of the site! Since mobile browsing is becoming more common, these ads are becoming increasingly annoying; it can be very challenging to quickly close these windows on a touch screen.

The absolute worst is when these pop-up-type ads are asking me to subscribe to their newsletter...

Newsletter Requests

When I arrive at a site, there's a good chance it's my first time checking the site out. How, then, can I know upon arrival at a site whether or not I want to subscribe to the newsletter? I need to read the content on the site first! It irritates me when these sites apparently expect me to blindly subscribe. That said, if I like the content after I've read it, and the site has social media profile links available or even a discrete box where I can opt in to the newsletter, there's a good chance I'll take advantage of those features. But please, prove yourself to me first.

Music

If your site starts playing music as soon as I open the page, please don't expect me to stay long. I think this point is fairly self-explanatory.

Slide shows:

I do not understand why this phenomenon seems to be taking over the internet. It seems that every website I go to presents information into a slideshow. As I'm sure you have noticed, slideshows are particularly common when photos are involved, and this is definitely one of the most annoying things on the internet.

For example, I love geeksugar.com, but whenever I want to view the curated collections of products they are so good at putting together, I have to view a slow and cumbersome slideshow.

Whenever I view articles on Mashable like this fun collection of reflection images, I get the warm fuzzies because they provide the option to view the slideshow as one page. It's like they get me! When websites do not give me any options, I am irritated right away.

It's time-consuming and a huge turn off. The worst slideshows by far are those which load a new page with every click and are set up in such a way that you have to scroll down every time to see the full image or text. Some sites offer user friendly slideshows that do not actually load a new page with every click, but rather move seamlessly from image to image (like the Mashable slideshows). Others, while opening a new page with every click, are user friendly enough to auto-scroll down to the photo, requiring less effort.

Videos

If what you're saying can be described in words rather than in video, please do so.

I don't have any problems with people providing both video and text options. I know some people are very visually oriented and prefer videos. However, when I click through from Twitter or Google, intrigued by the name of an article, it frustrates me to no end when all I get is a video with little or no text.

When it comes to slideshows, I am willing to put up with them if the content is very attractive. But there is almost no content attractive enough to make me watch a video. Honestly, I will only watch a video one out of a hundred times.
I have seen articles online recommending the use of videos to drive blog traffic. But I have also posted about this pet peeve of mine on Twitter before and I received feedback indicating I'm not alone in my opinions here. Videos are annoying

I acknowledge that for some things, videos work best. But I'd rather have text with pictures in most situations.
Videos seem to be cropping up frequently on news sites, but often there is accompanying text. They also seem to be getting popular for how-to posts, which to me does not make sense. If I am following step-by-step instructions, I don't want to have to pause and scan forwards and backwards within the video as I'm completing the steps. I would rather see a text list where I can scroll up and down at my leisure.

Don't even get me started on videos that start playing as soon as the site is opened (I'm looking at you, Youtube!).
Yet, the absolute worst is when the video starts playing and it's an ad! And then when you pause it, it just starts playing again a minute later! Don't people know that interruptive marketing is going out of style?!

Why do people use these features so often?

I don't know, but maybe you do. Let me know if you guys love slideshows or videos, and why. I'd love for someone to change my mind!

Pinterest has been very eye-opening for me. Sometimes (most times) I pin something and am convinced it's going to get a lot of repins, and alas, most of the time, my pins aren't repinned at all. However, there are two things in particular that I have pinned that blew up right away (somewhat unexpectedly!), and one other pin that is like the gift that keeps on giving, for while it doesn't have a load of repins, at least one person repins it on a weekly basis. I'm not sure what makes pins attractive, or gives longevity to pins, allowing them to take on long-term lives of their own, but I'm sharing them with you below because a) if others loved them, you might, too, and b) maybe you can weigh in on what makes these pins so fabulous!

This is really fun, no doubt about it. It's also such a simple idea, one of those ones that makes you ask 'why didn't I think about that?!'. Then again, I post lots of tips and tricks and other handmade goodies that you could say the same about. Maybe this picture has the additional benefit of being visually appealing. It also, unlike many DIYs on Pinterest, appeals to a relational side of us, as it's not simply something creative and easy to execute, it's also something that functions as a very personal gift and promises to bring us closer to someone who is important to us.

I love asparagus, but I did not expect others to love it this much! This recipe is simple, which may be one of its attractions, but I suspect most people repin based more on the picture than on the recipe, and many of them probably don't even click through to the recipe before repinning. I've seen some gorgeous food photography in my time, though, and those pins haven't necessarily taken Pinterest by storm, so I'm not quite sure what's going on here.

Okay, obviously I see the attraction here. This is funny. But at the same time, I pinned a few more 'hipster Disney' pics on the same day, and none of them have received much attention. Is this about the villainous side of this character -- a change from the typical hipster Disney princesses? Or is it more about the food aspect -- that the joke about organic food resonates with a lot of people? My guess is as good as yours.

Note: after all my speculation, I think that sometimes it's just random when things get repinned a lot. I think it depends a lot on the time of day, and who repins it (e.g. if someone influential repins your pin, all their followers will see it and voila! Lots of repins!).
First of all, let me just say that I love Apple and everything it creates, so this isn't meant to be an Apple-bashing post. It's precisely because I use my iPhone and all it's handy capabilities so often that I'm bugged by these (mostly) minor issues.
Post your own iPhone pet peeves in the comments!
1. Tabs in Safari
It irritates me to no end that when you open a link in a new window in Safari, you are automatically switched over to the new window without the option of staying on the page you were already viewing. This has bothered me for ages, but at first I kind of disregarded my ire, figuring it was just one of those stupid, pointless things that was never going to change. But then I got my iPad and found (to my delight) that in Safari on iPad, new tabs open without disrupting your current viewing! This needs to happen on iPhone, fast.

2. Downloading Apps from the App Store
Along the same lines, can someone please explain to me why on earth the App Store has to close every time you click download/buy on an App? I don't need to view my home screen! In fact, chances are, I want to keep browsing for apps! I almost always download multiple apps at a time and it is such a waste of time to have to watch the app store close and reopen after the purchase of each app. Unfortunately, I can't say this problem has been fixed on the iPad, unlike the Safari

3. Siri Lacking Support for Map Information in Canada
Apparently this is supposed to roll out in 2012... Fingers crossed! I want to be able to locate coffee (by voice command, of course) wherever I am!
But in all earnestness, this prevents you from viewing movie listings, searching for anything nearby you like a restaurant or post office, and looking up directions via Siri. These are all valuable functions, in my opinion.

4. Tweet from Siri
When I'm walking and want to send a voice command, I more often think of something that I want to tweet than of anything else -- and, guess what? It's essentially the only thing I can't do by voice command. Siri is great, but if they're going to integrate Twitter into iOS it would be really helpful if it were fully integrated.

5. Facebook Integration
On the topic of integration, I really think you should be able to share photos and website directly from Photos and Safari to Facebook, as you can now to Twitter. I realize this isn't only Apple's fault -- Facebook needs to play nice for this to happen. But, as far as I can tell, Facebook is simply allowing Twitter to have the upper hand by not striking a deal with Apple to make this happen. Not to mention it would be very convenient for me...

6. Flash Support
This has been a long time coming. Like Facebook, Flash probably just needs to work with Apple a bit to have this longtime dream of many Apple fanatics come true.

7. Ability to Reorder Reminders
I use the reminders feature all the time, often for things like my grocery or packing list. But I am unable to reorder the reminders after adding them! This is extremely frustrating because I often miss items in scrolling up and down all the time while I'm walking through the grocery store.

8. Formatting for Notes
This is kind of like the Reminders thing. I use Notes a lot for all kinds of purposes, sometimes even writing whole blog posts on my notes app while I'm on a bus, or even copying things down from a book into the library for use in an essay later. I would love it if I could have more font options -- ones that are more societally acceptable, like Times New Roman or Arial -- but I would particularly love the ability to bold/italic/underline text.

Note: I quickly googled all of these in the interests of research, and in most cases you can either download an App (often paid) or use a backwoods way to change these things yourself. However, I paid a lot for my iPhone, and I don't think it's too much to ask to have Apple make my life easier and just include these features by default, pretty please?
Think of it as a variety blog, an all-you-can-eat blog buffet, because I will be blogging about anything and everything on here -- topics I care about and which, hopefully, you care about too. I was shamelessly inspired by the recent "Linsanity" surrounding Jeremy Lin for my blog name, but I consider it a lucky coincidence I can't ignore that my name works with all the same ludicrous puns. I'll try not to drive you crazy with the puns, but I hope this blog makes you feel Lynnspired all the same!
